The Village Square Theatre

Village Square Theatre History

Village Square Theatre traces its roots to 1960, when a group of Lexington parents formed the Lexington Recreation Committee to create activities for local children. What began with dances, youth sports and community festivals soon grew to include theatre. By the early 1970s, productions were being presented at the old Lexington Elementary School, bringing families and performers together and helping establish theatre as an important part of the community.

As interest in the arts grew, the organization became the Lexington County Arts Association in 1975. Theatre continued to expand through community productions and the development of Junior Arts, giving young performers opportunities to experience the stage. Productions moved among several local venues while directors, performers, volunteers and families helped build an increasingly active community theatre program.

A major milestone came in 1987, when the Lexington County Arts Association purchased the former Village Square movie theatre and transformed it into the permanent home of Village Square Theatre. Today, the theatre continues the tradition begun more than six decades ago, presenting plays, musicals and Junior Arts productions while providing generations of Lexington-area performers and audiences a place to experience live theatre.
